Bands are growth, not dye
Fluorite, sliced
$68
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, and it grows in bands — each colour zone is a separate episode of crystal growth with a different trace impurity in the solution. Sliced across the bands and polished on both faces, the zoning reads as a map. Colour ranges from nearly clear to green, purple and blue in the same piece.
- Material
- Fluorite (CaF₂), sliced and polished both faces
- Hardness
- 4 on the Mohs scale — softer than steel
- Form
- Free-form slice, natural banding
- Care
- Handle by the edges. Keep away from other stones; fluorite scratches easily. Polishing dust is a workshop hazard, not a handling one — a finished slice is safe to keep on a shelf.
- Treatment
- None declared — written confirmation from the supplier is still being collected
Every stone carries a treatment line in its specification table. "None declared" means the supplier has not told us of any treatment and we are still collecting that statement in writing. If a stone has been heated, irradiated, dyed or resin-filled, we say which — a treated stone is not a defect, but it is a different object, and some treatments change how it should be kept.
Ships from Hangzhou in 2–5 business days. Delivery is typically 7–15 business days to the US and 8–16 to the EU, UK, Australia and New Zealand, customs permitting. Import duties and taxes are charged by your country's customs, not by us, and are payable on delivery. The United States ended its $800 duty-free exemption on 29 August 2025, so US orders now attract duty at every value. The EU introduces a flat €3 duty per item on goods below €150 from 1 July 2026. Where it comes from
Fluorite is soft — a 4 on the Mohs scale, softer than a steel knife — and it cleaves perfectly in four directions. That softness is why it was the first mineral anyone described as fluorescent: it glows under ultraviolet light, and the phenomenon was named after the stone rather than the other way round. It also scratches if you look at it wrong, which is why a slice is sold as something to stand on a shelf rather than carry.
