Stoneware, incised sutra band
Censer with a sand-gold glaze
$92
The gold is a fired glaze, not a gilding: metal oxides in the glaze crystallise on cooling and leave a granular, slightly matt surface that scatters light instead of reflecting it. A band of text is incised through the glaze before firing, so the cut edges stay sharp and the characters read as shadow rather than as paint.

Ships from Hangzhou in 2–5 business days. Delivery is typically 7–15 business days to the US and 8–16 to the EU, UK, Australia and New Zealand, customs permitting. Import duties and taxes are charged by your country's customs, not by us, and are payable on delivery. The United States ended its $800 duty-free exemption on 29 August 2025, so US orders now attract duty at every value. The EU introduces a flat €3 duty per item on goods below €150 from 1 July 2026. Where it comes from
Metallic-looking glazes come from iron, copper or titanium oxides fired in reduction, where the kiln is starved of oxygen and the oxides give up oxygen instead. The result is a surface that looks like metal but is glass, which is why it does not tarnish. The Heart Sutra is short enough to be incised around a vessel, which is why it turns up on objects far more often than longer texts.
